Congratulatory Trinkets (Commentary)

Lyrics
[Commentary: Wax & Kush Mody] I love this one how was the uh, explain this uh, genesis of this one Uh, well this was uh, this was something you had, already. You had- you had a beat, and uhm It wasn't a beat though, I basically wrote a poem and put guitar- some guitar chords behind it, and this was like- You had some drums too. You had- I did? It was like a whole different vibe, and it didn't fit the album, but- but there were pieces top it that I- that's I was like, "we can work with this" Ooh! Shit, That's right. The initial one was like- it was like a high energy feel It had uh, more of a boom bap thing going on [Verse] I wonder where thеy got all the parts and glass Probably at Michael's Arts and Crafts The gold rеcord sized hole in my heart's been patched And now, I have no desires or attachments I'm a fully formed, truly enlightened, perfect me 'Cause I sold a bunch of songs ten years ago in Germany [Commentary: Wax & Kush Mody] And- and I was like, "nah, I fuck with this" but it doesn't really fit the aesthetic of the album, but the lyrics are perfect for the album, and I pitched reworking it to to something more like this. And uhm, talking about crediting your influences, a big influence on the production was uh, Khruangbin, one of the early kinda- like you know, early discussions that we had was like, "what do you- what do you want the instruments to sound like?" and Khruangbin came up as like kinda the- a nice reference for like a sound that's like vintage and modern at the same time. And so uh, yeah we just kinda went in that direction Yeah, and it kinda has like- like even- I mean, obviously Khruangbin harkens back to their own way to like The Meters. This to me also has like a "Credence" thing to it, y'know? And a lot of things on the album have like a that era of classic rock, obviously The Beatles but even like The [?] remind me of Credence, y'know? I wanted to ask you like- so in this song, y'know, I think that these four chords right here or maybe on the other part- Yeah -The four chords were like just kinda joints that I had sent. but in those chords, you added this riff, y'know? Scaba-do-ba-do-ba Yeah, yeah, yeah So like, so like you're kind of a riff guy Love a good riff, man. I grew up on Led Zeppelin, dude So how- so I'm a riff guy too. I think that's one thing that we bond on, is riffs, you know what I'm saying, which is funny to say. But uhm, how do you come up with riffs, that are like new y'know what I mean Well, you don't. You just have to accept that its all the pentatonic scale How is it possible that we're able to come up with so many riffs? Not us, me and you, but the- the world, and still like… I mean, it's context. Like you know, those notes have been used, but not in this exact way Right As long as the context is original, as long as vibe is unique, you can reuse phrases all damn day Yeah, and with the same notes, you're going to do it on accident Yeah And it continues lyrically with the first song with the idea of the first song where it's like, all these things, Grammys and soccer trophies, and the ultimate congratulatory trinket that I mentioned is like the purple heart you know, "thanks so much for losing your life for us, thanks, here's a little thing, here's a little trinket"
