Song Meaning
The lyrics open with a seemingly tender farewell, a gentle "Dobranoc!" (Goodnight!) meant to usher in sleep and peace. The narrator invokes angels and wishes for weary eyes to rest, hoping the heart will be filled with calm. This initial tone suggests a comforting end to a shared moment, a desire for the other person's well-being as they drift off.
However, a subtle shift begins in the second verse. The narrator hopes that "some quiet and charming sound" from their shared time will linger, playing in the listener's ear and even making the narrator's image "charming" to their sleepy eyes. This moves beyond simple well-wishing into a desire to remain present, to occupy the other person's thoughts even in sleep.
The third verse reveals a growing desperation and a stark contrast between the narrator's wishes and the other person's actions. The narrator asks for one last look, to kiss their cheek, but the other person is already turning away, "shutting the door." The narrator's "Dobranoc! Zapięta" (Goodnight! Zipped up/Fastened) feels like a desperate, almost pathetic attempt to hold onto something that's already gone, as the other person is clearly trying to leave.
The outro crystallizes the tension. The "Dobranoc! Ci przez Klamkę" (Goodnight! To you through the doorknob) is a poignant image of separation, the door now firmly "Zamknięta!" (Closed!). The final, repeated "Dobranoc!" followed by the admission "Nie Dałbym Ci Zasnąć..." (I wouldn't let you sleep...) is a devastating twist. It reveals the initial goodnight was a facade; the narrator's true desire was not for the other person's peace, but to prevent their departure, to keep them from sleeping, and thus, to keep them from leaving.
