Song Meaning

The lyrics paint a picture of a deep-seated desire to escape Omaha, a feeling that starts even before graduation. The narrator is "ready to disown" classmates and has packed bags, eager for "University-" and a move "up and out." This initial ambition, however, quickly unravels, revealing a more complex and perhaps tragic inability to break free from the town's gravitational pull. The central tension lies in the repeated, failed attempts at escape. A spontaneous drive to Denver, fueled by "caffeine pills," ends in sickness and a stark realization: "My friend, he escaped from Omaha... I never will." Later, a relationship with a "nomad" lover and a move to Portland also prove temporary, culminating in a purchase of "baggage" that ironically becomes the means of escape, but not from Omaha itself.
