Lyrics

She said he was her real-life Ponyboy I told her Ponyboy was made up by a 16-year-old girl She laughed and said she was 16 when she read the book, fell in love with him, and left home He was only seventeen and as skinny as a pole He always told corny jokes and would hold her hand where ever they'd go They hopped a train out of Florida and made it on top of box cars in the wind and the stars above They shot dope in Louisiana and lived in and abandoned house And worked on a fishing boat out of Delacroix They swam naked in the San Juan River during a thunderstorm Got a fancy hotel room because she turned 18 that day too She lost a finger on a West Texas ranch and left a miscarriage there too Her Ponyboy OD'd in Yuma but a motel maid brought him to Worked on a pecan farm for a year and got married By a preacher who said the black dog would always haunt them She got sick in Blanding so Ponyboy worked on a Mormon ranch But they left after they'd saved three grand He drove her to Baja on a motorcycle and they spent the winter by the sea But they ended up robbed and stranded in Slab City Her Ponyboy wasn't worried he always had a plan Kept a thousand dollars hidden in his left boot sole When summer started they caught a train headed north and fell in with two kid hobos She fell asleep to the clanging and woke up outside of Klamath Falls The two hobo kids were blue and her Ponyboy with a needle in his arm was too She held him as the train rattled through the state Jumped off in Madras and has been struggling since that day She smiled missing teeth and showed me a picture of them by a broken-down car It was outside of Pima and her Ponyboy just flagged them down a ride
