Lyrics

[Spoken Intro] "When I'm Blowing Smoke" is one of the handful of songs that I've written about my family and the life of my family. More personal that way. The smoke being referred to in this song is jive talk--it's like joking or silly pontificating, you know, which I'm prone to do around my family. And I wanted to capture that moment of jesting, you know, with a more serious reflection of family life and those moments of real contentment, when a sense of love and yearning to embrace them all and keep them forever kind of rushes over us. [Verse 1] When I'm blowing smoke She'll be laughing at my jokes She could always get the joke I'll tell the world I love her [Chorus 1] When I lose my place One foot in the human waste Gentle understanding heart Will move me back again To my lover and my friend [Verse 2] When I'm blowing smoke Or when I'm at the end of my rope She cuts the line and offers me hope No shame to say I need her [Chorus 2] And our children smile At their father-child And the dreamy days roll by They bring me home again To my lover and my friend When I'm blowing smoke [Bridge] And I will find her Where love binds her God surrounds her And keeps her in that holy place [Verse 1] She'll be laughing at my jokes She could always get the joke I'll tell the world I love her [Chorus 2] And our children smile At their father-child And the dreamy days roll by They bring me home again To my lover and my friend [Outro] When I'm blowing smoke When I'm blowing smoke When I'm blowing smoke When I'm blowing smoke
