The Guidman’s Ground

Lyrics
[Verse 1] My great grandfather, he said to me And his grandfather to him That the guidman's ground must not be plowed Or else the sky would dim And milkmaids going about their tasks Would find their beasts were dry Crops would fail and a plague would come The old and young must die [Verse 2] And so it was for the many years Safe was the guidman's ground And nature did smile down on us When autumn came around The harvest shone ever bright As crops were taken in The old must die in the wintertime Still the young wеre born in spring [Verse 3] Mister said things must change Thе fields should now be plowed To keep a park for the devil's use Must never be allowed Well, I held out for a year or two Until they fined me for my sin And I was much reduced And so eventually gave in [Verse 4] It seems that when I cut the earth I cut the guidman deep And he has turned his back on me Good luck I cannot keep A pair of horses, they up and died My crops all did the same Though I did plow the guidman's ground It was me who was to blame [Verse 5] And now my darling has taken ill They say she may not live The devil is no help to me And the man of God I can't forgive
