Lyrics

This song came from England in many ways; it was written here, it was written in London, it was written for an English girl who I was crazy about at the time and I wasn't getting too far with her, to tell you the truth. So I resorted to desperate measures... I wrote a song for her. And ladies and gentlemen, once I get them on the piano bench, they're pretty much dead ducks. Except in this particular case, when after I sang this song for the young woman she said "Oh," she said, "that's so silly!", which broke my hеart into a thousand smithereens. So as I'm flying back to L.A. with my tail between my legs, I'm rеading the Rolling Stone that said Simon and Garfunkel are breaking up, and I sense an opportunity. So I rushed to Artie [Garfunkel]'s side with this song. And in San Francisco I played this song for Artie and Roy Halee, his brilliant engineer, and I played this song. And Artie turns to Roy and says "I think we can make a hit outta that, don't you Roy?" And you know what? They did.
