There are very few constants in rock and roll, but for 51 years, one rule has stood firm: If The Eagles are playing, Joe Walsh is on stage. On Saturday night at the Las Vegas Sphere, that streak officially ended.

The legendary guitarist was forced to miss the band's 46th show of their residency due to a "bad case of the flu". It marked the first time Walsh has missed a gig since joining the band in 1975.

"We Could Cancel, or Man Up"

Addressing the confused crowd, frontman Don Henley was blunt about the situation. "We had a choice to make," Henley told the audience. "We could either cancel the whole thing, or we could man up and do the show."

The band opted for the latter, holding an emergency two-hour rehearsal that afternoon to rework the entire show. "Fortunately, in this band, we have a deep bench," Henley added.

Next Man Up: Vince Gill Steps In

With Walsh down, the heavy lifting fell to country icon Vince Gill and Deacon Frey (son of the late Glenn Frey). Gill took over lead vocals on Walsh classics like "In The City" and "Life’s Been Good," while Frey handled the iconic guitar duel in "Hotel California" alongside touring guitarist Chris Holt.

The absence did force some setlist casualties. The James Gang funk classic "Funk #49" was cut because, frankly, you can't play it without Walsh. In its place, the band subbed in their first-ever #1 hit, "Best of My Love".

Music is Medicine

Despite the drama, the show was a triumph of professionalism. Henley dedicated "The Boys of Summer" to the recently departed Bobby Weir and noted that "After the week we’ve had, we could all use some medicine.".

In other news, the band celebrated yet another milestone this week: their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 album became the first in history to be certified 40x Platinum (Quadruple Diamond). Henley joked about the achievement onstage: "I’m not sure we got paid for all that. It’s just Spotify."

The Eagles are scheduled to resume their residency on January 30, giving Walsh a few days to recover.
