It sounds like a blockbuster trade in professional sports, but this time, it happened in the rock world. 2025 will be remembered as the year Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails essentially traded drummers, a move that left fans—and even the musicians themselves—scratching their heads.
In a new interview, drummer Josh Freese opened up about his sudden departure from the Foo Fighters in May, admitting he is still "in the dark" about the specific reasons behind the split.
Freese: "I Have a Couple of Theories"
Freese, who joined Dave Grohl's band following the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins, told reporters that "no reason was given" for his firing. While he admits he has "a couple of theories," likely pointing toward management decisions or musical fit, he remains hesitant to speculate publicly.
"I enjoyed the past two years with them," Freese said, noting that he supports whatever the band feels is best for their future.
Trent Reznor's Surprise
On the other side of the equation, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor recently explained how Ilan Rubin (NIN's longtime drummer) ended up taking Freese's spot in the Foo Fighters.
"The reality of that scenario was it was a surprise to me that Ilan was joining the Foo Fighters," Reznor admitted in an interview with Consequence.
Faced with a looming tour and a vacant drum stool, Reznor made the logical call: he dialed Josh Freese, who had previously played with NIN from 2005 to 2008. "As soon as I heard the news, I thought I could call Josh and he could play the show tonight... He was available and willing," Reznor explained.
Just a Coincidence?
Despite the perfect timing, Freese insists there was no backroom deal. "It’s not like there was a purposeful drum swap," Freese clarified on SiriusXM. "It’s just coincidence the way it worked out".
With the dust settled, both bands are hitting the road in 2026 with their new (and old) rhythm sections firmly in place.
