For fans of heavy metal, 2025 will forever be remembered as a year of extreme highs and devastating lows. It was the year Black Sabbath said their final goodbye at Villa Park, and weeks later, the world mourned the passing of the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne.
Now, as the dust settles, the "Architect of Heavy Metal," Tony Iommi, has emerged with a message of hope and creativity. In a New Year’s video update, the legendary guitarist confirmed what fans have been waiting for: a new solo album is officially coming in 2026.
Iommi hasn't released a solo record since 2005's Fused. But in his video message, he left no room for doubt.
"In 2026, I shall have, definitely, definitely, my solo album out. I’m really looking forward to that. I’m enjoying doing it. It’s been great fun".
While details remain scarce, Iommi hinted that he has been working in his newly built studio, channeling the emotions of the past year into new riffs.
The announcement comes as Iommi reflects on a turbulent 12 months. He spoke fondly of the "Back To The Beginning" show in Birmingham, where bands from across the globe gathered to honor Sabbath's legacy. But the joy was short-lived.
"It’s just unfortunate and sad that Ozzy passed away a couple of weeks after that," Iommi shared, visibly moved. "May he rest in peace".
2026 isn't just about the album. Iommi also teased a new documentary with Gibson that is coming "very, very soon". This follows a busy year where he collaborated with Robbie Williams on the track "Rocket" and even brought heavy metal to the ballet.
For a man who has defined a genre for over 50 years, Tony Iommi shows no signs of slowing down. If 2025 was about saying goodbye to the past, 2026 is shaping up to be a loud, heavy new beginning.
