Metallica frontman James Hetfield, affectionately known to fans as "Papa Het," has surprised the world this holiday season with a special spoken-word rendition of the 1823 classic, "'Twas The Night Before Christmas".

The unique version first premiered on the band’s official SiriusXM channel, Maximum Metallica. The release was accompanied by a warm invitation for fans to "grab your cocoa and settle in by the fire" before the long winter's nap.

From Metal to Mistletoe

While Hetfield is globaly recognized for his powerful thrash metal vocals and heavy riffs, this Yuletide rendition is surprisingly faithful to the original 19th-century poem. Hearing the man behind "Master of Puppets" intone lines about "visions of sugar-plums" offers a rare and charming side of the metal legend.

To accompany the narration, Metallica released an animated video featuring a cozy, festive scene of a crackling fireplace and Christmas stockings hanging by the mantle.

A Gift for the Metallica Family

The spoken-word track is being hailed as a special gift to the fans to thank them for their ongoing support. While many rock artists release holiday covers, Hetfield’s choice to perform a dramatic reading adds a unique personal touch to the band's legacy.

For Metallica, this release marks a warm conclusion to 2025, proving once again that even the kings of metal have a soft spot for the holiday spirit.
