The Recording Academy has officially announced its class of legends for 2026. Next year, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards will honor a diverse group of icons who have reshaped the musical landscape, including Whitney Houston, Cher, and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
One of the most significant inductions this year is the late Fela Kuti. The Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and activist becomes the first African musician in history to receive the Lifetime Achievement honor. Known for his complex rhythms and political activism, Kuti's influence can still be heard in modern pop and hip-hop today.
Joining him is "The Voice" herself, Whitney Houston. The six-time Grammy winner, who passed away in 2012, is being honored for a career that set the gold standard for vocalists worldwide. Also on the list is Cher, receiving the award exactly 60 years after her very first Grammy nomination with Sonny & Cher.
The prestigious list is rounded out by guitar legend Carlos Santana, folk-rock icon Paul Simon (who is being honored as a solo artist), and the "Queen of Funk," Chaka Khan.
In a special nod to the craft of songwriting, the Academy is also presenting the Trustees Award to Bernie Taupin. Best known as Elton John's longtime lyricist, Taupin is responsible for writing some of the biggest hits in history, proving that the person holding the pen is just as important as the one holding the mic.
The Special Merit Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on January 31, 2026, the day before the main Grammy Awards broadcast.
