The Recording Academy has officially announced its 2026 Special Merit Award recipients, and the list is nothing short of legendary. Leading the class is the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who is set to make history as the first African musician to ever receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kuti, often referred to as the "Black President," was more than just a musician; he was a fearless political voice who redefined the sound of a continent by blending funk, jazz, and traditional Nigerian rhythms. While he was never nominated for a competitive Grammy during his lifetime, his influence on modern music is undisputed.
The honor for Kuti comes alongside several other music icons who have shaped the foundation of modern recording. The 2026 honorees include Whitney Houston, Cher, Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, and Paul Simon.
For Whitney Houston, the award comes 14 years after her passing, further solidifying her legacy as "The Voice". Meanwhile, Cher will receive the honor exactly 60 years after her first career Grammy nomination.
In a move that resonates deeply with the songwriting community, the Academy will also present the Trustees Award to Bernie Taupin. Best known for his legendary partnership with Elton John, Taupin’s induction highlights the critical role of lyricists in music history.
The special ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on January 31, 2026, just one day before the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.
