The Community Security Trust has reported the band to the police after a "disturbing" visual equated the Star of David with the Swastika. Even the venue was "appalled."

Music has always been a platform for protest, but on Friday night, Scottish rock band Primal Scream crossed a line that separates political commentary from pure hate speech.

During a concert at the iconic London Roundhouse, the band shocked the audience by displaying graphic imagery that entwined the Star of David—the symbol of Judaism—with the Nazi Swastika. The incident has rightly sparked outrage, a police report, and a groveling apology from the venue itself.

The Incident

The disturbing visuals appeared while the band was performing their 2000 hit "Swastika Eyes" , a track from the album "XTRMNTR".

While the song originally critiqued the military-industrial complex, the band chose to update the visuals in the most offensive way possible. A short film played on screen, combining footage of devastation in Gaza with images of political figures, including the Israeli and U.S. presidents. In a move widely recognized as a modern antisemitic trope, the eyes of these figures were replaced by animations of the Star of David merging with a Swastika.

"Appalled": The Backlash

The reaction was immediate. The London Roundhouse, one of the city's most respected venues, distanced itself from the act, stating they were "appalled that antisemitic imagery was displayed" and clarifying they had no prior knowledge of the film.

More seriously, the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism, has reported the band to the police. In a statement, the CST cut through the band's artistic pretensions: "Entwining a Star of David with a swastika implies that Jews are Nazis and risks encouraging hatred of Jews."

At LyricsWeb, we believe in the power of lyrics to challenge authority. However, equating the victims of the Holocaust with their perpetrators is not "edgy"—it is a dangerous distortion of history and a form of incitement.

The Band's Weak Defense

Despite the hurt caused, Primal Scream doubled down on Instagram today (Dec. 13), hiding behind the veil of "art." The group claimed the film was "meant to provoke debate, not hate," and argued that freedom of expression is a right they "choose to exercise."

However, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. When "debate" is provoked by using the most painful symbols of Jewish trauma against Jewish people, it ceases to be a debate—it becomes an assault.

The film reportedly concluded with the text: "Our government is complicit in genocide." While political disagreement is legitimate, the visual language used to express it was undeniably hateful.
