Artist Bio

Anita Ward burst onto the music scene in 1979 with a sound so infectious it dominated dance floors worldwide. Though her career is often defined by a single, undeniable hit, Ward's story is one of talent, unexpected success, and a journey back to her gospel roots. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Ward's initial aspirations leaned towards education, not stardom. She was pursuing a degree in psychology at Rust College when she was discovered by producer Frederick Knight. Knight saw potential in her voice and offered her a record deal, initially envisioning her as a blues artist. However, fate, or perhaps a change of musical direction, intervened. Knight presented Ward with a song originally intended for Stacy Lattisaw, but deemed too suggestive for the young singer. That song was Ring My Bell, and it would catapult Ward to international fame. Its catchy melody, combined with Ward's powerful vocals, made it an instant disco anthem. The song topped charts in the US, Canada, and Sweden, and became a staple of dance clubs around the globe. The success of "Ring My Bell" was both a blessing and a curse. While it opened doors and provided opportunities, it also cast a long shadow over Ward's subsequent work. She released other singles, including Don't Drop My Love, which received some airplay, but none achieved the same level of commercial success. The album that followed did not fare well in sales. In the years that followed, Ward faced the challenges of navigating the music industry while grappling with the pressure of living up to her initial success. She continued to perform, keeping the spirit of disco alive and well. Later in life, Anita Ward embraced her Christian faith, returning to her gospel roots and focusing on music that reflected her spiritual beliefs. While If I Could Feel That Old Feeling Again might evoke memories of a specific time, Ward’s journey took her in new directions. Despite being largely known for "Ring My Bell", she also recorded songs like I Won't Stop Loving You. Her story remains a fascinating example of the complexities of the music industry and the evolving path of an artist. Anita Ward's legacy extends beyond a single hit; it's a testament to her talent and resilience, forever ringing in the hearts of disco fans worldwide.
